K.u.K. – Kaiserschmarrn

Kaiserschmarrn, or the Emperor’s Mess, is an Austrian classic served in Alpine huts, taverns and  Vienna coffee houses. Many different stories are told about the dish, created in the mid 18th century, but they all agree that it was named after Emperor Franz Joseph. According to the most famous of these stories the Kaiser got lost in the forest during a hunting trip. He wandered until he met a country girl who took pity on him and offered him some of her “Schmarrn” so that he would not starve to death. He enjoyed this food so much that it became known as “Kaiserschmarrn”.
